History of Wiseton
Wiseton is a small estate village in the Bassetlaw district of Nottinghamshire, located south of Bawtry. The name is of Old English origin, meaning 'Wisa's farmstead'. Wiseton Hall, originally built in the 18th century, was the seat of the Spencer Stanhope family and later the Acklom family. The hall was rebuilt in the 19th century and is surrounded by landscaped grounds. The village has the planned, uniform appearance typical of an estate village, with well-maintained cottages and a sense of order. Wiseton sits in the flat, agricultural countryside of northern Nottinghamshire, near the border with South Yorkshire and Lincolnshire.
