History of Pye Hill
Pye Hill is a small settlement in the Ashfield district of Nottinghamshire, located near the town of Jacksdale between Selston and Underwood. The name refers to the hill's prominence in the landscape — 'pye' may derive from an old word for a vantage point. The area's history is closely tied to coal mining, which was the dominant industry in this part of the Nottinghamshire-Derbyshire coalfield for over a century. Pye Hill & Jacksdale railway station served the area until the Beeching cuts of the 1960s. Today Pye Hill is a quiet residential area, with the former mining landscape gradually being reclaimed by nature. The surrounding countryside offers attractive walking routes with views across the Erewash valley.
