History of Moorhouse
Moorhouse is a small hamlet in the Newark and Sherwood district of Nottinghamshire, situated in the rural countryside near Laxton. The name simply means 'house on the moor', referring to the moorland or heathland that once characterised parts of this area. Moorhouse is close to the village of Laxton, which is renowned for maintaining the last open field farming system in England, a living link to medieval agriculture. The hamlet has remained small throughout its history, with farming as the primary occupation. The surrounding landscape of open fields and hedgerows provides an unusually authentic view of what much of the English countryside looked like in centuries past.
