History of Brough
Brough is a village in the Newark and Sherwood district of Nottinghamshire, located near the old Roman road known as the Fosse Way. The name derives from the Old English 'burh', meaning a fortified place, which suggests early defensive earthworks in the area. Archaeological evidence indicates Roman activity here, and the village sits close to the site of the Roman town of Crocolana. Throughout the medieval period Brough was a small agricultural settlement. Today it remains a quiet village surrounded by the flat, fertile farmland of the Trent valley, with views stretching across open countryside.
